A sacrament is a physical means ordered by God through which we receive His grace (His life and love).

In the Letter of St James, those who are sick are advised to call for a priest to pray over them and anoint them with oil. It is appropriate to receive this sacrament when seriously ill, facing a major operation or experiencing the difficulties of old age.
You may be anointed more than once, especially in the case of a worsening illness or when death is likely. The sacrament consists in a priest anointing the head and hands of the sick person while saying prayers. The anointing helps the sick person come closer to Christ, gives them strength in the face of continuing illness or imminent death, brings forgiveness of sins and, if it be God’s will, physical healing.
At St Francis
Anointing is available for the sick who ask for it. It is especially appropriate when people face death, when they may also receive communion (‘viaticum’) and ease their conscience by confession of their sins or any other matter which is troubling them.
The help which this sacrament gives people is especially important and no one should think the priest is too busy to anoint them.
